Opinel knives are a classic in bushcraft circles and they have huge following in Europe. Like Mora knives, they are typically very affordable and very effective cutting tools. The most commonly seen Opinel is the #8, which hasn’t changed a bit in almost 130 years. But that doesn’t mean that this French company isn’t paying attention to today’s outdoorspeople. The Opinel #12 Explore is a folding knife designed for hunting and survival. The convex grind stainless steel blade locks into an open or closed position with Opinel’s patented twisting collar lock. The knife also has a retractable gut hook and a shrill 110 decibel whistle integrated into the handle.
Great read for someone like myself that would like to know the basic's of outdoor living. This book is every bit the book I was told it was. Straight to the point and plenty of pic's so you do not have to guess what the writer is trying to describe as is the case with a lot of outdoor books/guides. I like the way he tells you about the different approaches/techniques for the same topic and which one he prefers and why. I am enjoying this book and look forward to my next camping trip so I can try these shills out for myself. This book is for the novice not the pros, it covers topics in plain simple talk and not some industrie language where the writer assumes you already know what is being talked about.
A: Bushcraft knives are used to build shelter, start and maintain fires, collect water (think carving through ice on a frozen stream), make secondary tools like batons or spears for catching fish, prepare food and for self-defense and rescue. But since the blade on a bushcraft knife is typically big and sharp you have to know how to wield it or your savior could wind up being your enemy. In order to wield your bushcraft knife safely then make sure you:

In tropical areas, a survival kit may have mosquito head netting, additional insect repellent, anti-fungal cream, a machete, water purification tablets, foot powder, matches, a flint strike, a compass, a wire saw, a space blanket, medical equipment (gauze pads, elastic gauze bandage, antiseptic creams, anti-malaria tablets, anti-infection tablets, bandages, etc.), salt tablets, a fishing kit, snare wire, extra socks, a candle, a signal mirror, flares, a sewing kit, safety pins, tinder, tape, a whistle, and rations.
Bushcraft (the art of wilderness survival) is a hobby that needs a sturdy knife with a thick blade made of high-quality steel, as well as an easy to sharpen grind and a good wedge. Our selection of Bushcrafting knives offers both folding Bushcraft knives and fixed blade Bushcraft knives, and we have the best knife options available for outdoorsmen.
Other small kits are wearable and built into everyday carry survival bracelets or belts. Most often these are paracord bracelets with tools woven inside. Several tools such as firestarter, buckles, whistles and compass are on the exterior of the gear and smaller tools are woven inside the jewelry or belt and only accessible by taking the bracelet apart.

Ka-Bar is well known for the quality of their knives and their BK2 Campanion bushcraft knife is no exception. The full tang blade is just as comfortable cutting small branches to cover your shelter as it is gutting your catch or skinning a rabbit. You can lean into the task at hand with confidence knowing the full tang, drop point blade won’t let you down. If you’re heading into the wild for any length of time you’re going to want the Ka-Bar Campanion bushcraft knife slung from your belt.
If you’re going to sleep out then you’re likely going to need a sleeping bag, although some people like to sleep out with just a woollen blanket. I would recommend most people who are starting out with tarp camping should start with a sleeping bag, rated to a comfort temperature for the season you are camping in. Down sleeping bags are lightweight and compress small, but are expensive. A summer-weight synthetic bag is not too bulky and can be had for little money. If you are starting your bushcraft camping journey in the warmer months of the year, then this latter option is what I would go for. Battlbox Mission 50 Unboxing - EDC and Survival Gear

The Benchmade is indeed bench-made in Oregon and intended for use as a high performance tactical, outdoor survival knife. The full tang blade sees to it that this bushcraft knife won’t wilt under pressure or separate from the handle like many EDC knives can do when stressed. The G10 handles are extremely tough and the full grain leather sheath is all business, cradling the knife effectively so that, even if you’re on the run it won’t flop around and cause problems. This is a bushcraft knife engineered to exacting tolerances and crafted from high quality materials that will deliver when called upon. You’ll pay a bit more but you’ll get a bit more.
If you are trekking through the Yukon or trying to cross the Darien gap, you may find it necessary to wait weeks for help to reach you in a survival situation; but if you are just heading off to your local state park, emergency rescuers could probably reach you in a matter of hours. You’ll want to factor this consideration into your kit-building decisions. If you can expect to wait long periods before help will arrive, you’ll need more supplies than if you are heading out to an easily accessed area. Nevertheless, it is always wise to have the supplies to last longer than you think you’ll need them.

Bushcraft is the art of using the resources provided by our natural environment to survive and thrive in the great outdoors.  It combines the knowledge of how to best use the plants and animals at your disposal with some basic bushcraft tools to make outdoor living easier and more efficient.  In learning bushcraft skills we benefit in many ways including:
Great article as always. As far as I can tell, you covered the basic tools and equipment to get started in the woods. I would add a good compass and food. So many bushcraft videos forget to mention food. A good practice, I think, is to put together your own daily food rations. Enjoying the experience of self sufficient bushcraft will require nutrition and that’s best if your food matches your tastes.
If you’re content with fighting against disease, bodily functions, and zombies who occasionally phase through walls, you’ll get to DayZ’s best feature: exploration. The world of Chernarus is a Soviet wasteland, and Bohemia has captured that Eastern Bloc atmosphere with the towns and villages around the map. DayZ’s forests feel genuinely life-like rather than being man-made imitations, while there’s a true sense of isolation out in the wilderness.
Type of Steel - Most bushcraft knives have stainless steel blades of one sort or another. High carbon steel is commonly used because it’s durable and holds a razor sharp edge for a long time. But it’s also prone to corrosion, so if you’re going to purchase a bushcraft knife with a high carbon blade it should be coated or otherwise treated in some fashion to make it more corrosion resistant.
Military leaders know this, and it’s why everyone from the lowliest private to the most highly-trained Navy SEAL has a survival pack, perfected by soldiers and strategists over the centuries to contain all the gear necessary to get out of any kind of trouble they find themselves in. You can thank these government organizations for many of the tools and enhancements you rely on today in your urban bug out bag or get home bag.
Multi-tools have come a long way from their simple origins. Gerber’s Center-Drive multi-tool provides full size tools in a compactly designed folding package. The Center Axis bit driver works like a real screw driver and magnetically holds any standard driver bit (the tool comes with a sleeve of 12 assorted bits). It even has one-hand opening plier jaws that open with a flick of your thumb. The knife blade is 420HC steel and 3.25 inches long. The tool also has a saw, wire cutter, pry bar with nail puller, bottle opener, awl and file. The Center-Drive is made in the USA. $165 AmmoCan Survival Kit
If you do not find a used summer sleeping bag cheap, you should buy for summer use the Miltec Commando sleeping bag in Flecktarn. For 30,-€ if you have a friend with you, he should buy an own poncho and the same sleeping bag in olive, the us woodland isn’t so good in Germany to hide yourself in the nature. You need one or more comfortable two german military cooking pots for two people, Bundeswehr Kochgeschirr or Polizei Kochgeschirr in the same form, take it used, the new one is a bad fake! And if you want to go out in very rainy and colder conditions in spring and autum, you should buy a british army bivi bag (Biwaksack) for 40 € per person. Saw, axe and even the cooking pot you do only need one for two persons. Flecktarn clothing is light, cheap, tough and fast drying, because it has a cotton syntetic mix. The last things I wrote down you all get in your mext army shop or via internet from Raeer or ASMC very easy! What if you could turn virtually any water bottle into an effective water filter? The Lifestraw Universal kit comes with a 2-stage filter, two different sized caps and a leak-proof lid. Compatible with most Nalgene, Camelbak, Klean Kanteen, Hydro Flask, Under Armour, Gatorade and other standard bottles, the replaceable microbiological filter removes 99.999999 percent of waterborne bacteria and 99.999 percent of waterborne protozoan parasites. If that wasn’t enough, a replaceable activated carbon capsule removes a number of chemicals and improves the taste of the water. All materials are FDA approved, made from food grade silicon, Polysulfone and ABS plastic. The kit includes a wide mouth cap, standard mouth cap, sport mouthpiece, standard mouth piece, 2-stage filter, and carry bag.
Tarps are particularly well suited to sleeping in woodlands. They are easy to pitch, particularly with knowledge of a few simple yet versatile knots and plenty of trees to tie off to. You can also make tent pegs and other simple camp items you might need such as candle holders, using your knife and saw. So, all you really need to have in your bag to create a decent shelter in the woods is a tarp with guy lines attached. You don’t even need to spend a lot of money. You can buy a small builders tarp or a trailer tarp from a motoring store and add some nylon cord for the guy lines.
unless you live in a swamp, tropical environment or in the southwest, a machete is just about worthless. considering the average machete is 1/8 or less thick, they’re too thin for battoning. you can also forget about splitting with one since they lack the required mass, and anyone who digs with their cutting tool(s) is foolish beyond belief. digging sticks are used for that task to preserve the edge on the tool you intended to dig with. a garden trowel is better yet. if you really think you need to clear under brush and grasses, the woodsman’s pal or even the ontario rtak 2 are more practical choices.
That aside, bushcraft is not intended to be a survival ordeal when going out into the wilds of wherever we live. Bushcraft by definition is the skill of living in the wild. That doesn’t mean we need to deprive ourselves of modern tools and equipment. If you are comfortable heading out with nothing but a pair of shorts and a hat, then do that. Most of us, however, require a few more tools and gear.
Enough food for two weeks or more. Purchasing a ready-made emergency food supply can streamline the work of putting this together, since the measuring and weighing has already been done. Just remember to pack extra water if the food you choose needs rehydrating. You can also use stackable food containers if you prefer to measure and pack your own food but space is tight.
But before you need that axe, you need a lot more before that, only if there would be the chance that an oncle pays for you, you should try to get this Bauhaus or Fiskars knife, saw and axe in one rush! And a pair of leather working gloves with cotton textile, not synthetic, to protect your hands, if you are starting to use the saw. Later you will need them also, if you want to take your cooking pot from the fire. Because of this use, do not take anything with synthetic textile! At Bauhaus you also get head lamps very cheap, but do not take the smallest one from Energizer with that batteries in the form of a 1 € coin. They are good, but the batteries are very expensive! As a beginner you should buy a head lamp with normal and cheap batteries. The small ones are good for far distance hiking in the holydays, but to use them is very expensive because the batteries are expensive.
I should premise what follows with stating I’m assuming you have some outdoor clothing and footwear. If you are out for the day, you’ll probably need a daypack to carry items such as waterproofs, sandwiches and a drink and, again, you may already own something suitable. If you are out for an overnight camp then you’ll need a bigger pack to accommodate extra items such as a sleeping bag and a cooking pot. None of this kit is particularly specific to bushcraft and so I will not cover it in more detail here. If you want to see more wildlife then I’d recommend mute, natural colours for your clothing and pack.

Typically, survival kits are designed to help you get through a situation in which help cannot be secured. However, if you equip yourself with a satellite phone you can contact help from anywhere on the planet. In other situations, a pre-paid cell phone or two-way radio (be sure to find out the frequency the local ranger station or emergency responders use) may be all that you need to contact help when you need it most. I think I have spent a small fortune on Amazon by now and I have never written a review until now. I have read quite a few Bushcraft and survive books and in my opinion they're all good. Any book that teaches a person how to stay alive in the wilderness with little tools and resources is great. With that said, Mors Kochanski's Bush Craft book is hands down the best book I have read so far. It is easy to read, easy to understand and it has a lot of illustrations. Out of all the books I have read so far, if I could recommend only one book to anyone wanting to learn wilderness skills this would be the one.

Your predecessors did not survive. But they have left behind some vestiges! Dare to venture into the cave, tunnel through the stone and maybe you will discover a hidden bunker. Everything Ark does is rock-solid. The survival elements may be similar to what you’ve played before, but they’re the bedrock for the game’s more ambitious elements (and a strong Ark mods scene). Your character has RPG-like stats, and you can head into the world to hunt sci-fi secrets that offer a little more incentive to play rather than just ‘stay alive’.
How much you store at the office depends on where you work—both geographically and in what type of building. If you work in a high rise, you’ll have different storage limitations than if you work in a warehouse. “People need to be talking to their colleagues, to their supervisors, and thinking about what they need to stay safe in the workplace,” says Lyttle.
Fallout 76 is in development not just at Bethesda Game Studios’ main office, in Maryland, where the likes of Skyrim and Fallout 4 were made, but also at the company’s newest branch, in Austin, according to our sources. That Austin studio, formerly known as BattleCry Studios, had been working on an online hero combat game called BattleCry before that game was canceled. “We have concerns about the BattleCry game and whether it is meeting the objectives we have for it,” Bethesda told press in the fall of 2015. “We are evaluating what improvements the game needs to meet our quality standards. The studio remains busy during this process on multiple projects.” In March, Bethesda announced that BattleCry Studios had become part of Bethesda Game Studios.
Talk about good timing! I was just going to watch an episode of Ask Paul Kirtley as I have been wondering lately just about how much kit/gear/bells & whistles is absolutely necessary to start off with, and whether I’d gone overboard with my purchases. I was pleasantly surprised to see many items I’ve acquired to help me camp out mentioned in the article (Mora Companion, Bahco Laplander,DC4 stone, Firesteel, BCB mug).
Civilians such as forestry workers, surveyors, or bush pilots, who work in remote locations or in regions with extreme climate conditions may also be equipped with survival kits. Disaster supplies are also kept on hand by those who live in areas prone to earthquakes or other natural disasters. For the average citizen to practice disaster preparedness, some towns will have survival stores to keep survival supplies in stock. GTA Online - TRIPLE MONEY SANDY SURVIVAL $90K QUICK AND EASY
If a natural disaster hits your area tomorrow, are you thoroughly prepared? While no one can predict exactly when a natural disaster will strike, or how harsh it will be, everyone should own a quality survival kit. Survival kits are essential for every family, school, or business, no matter where you live or what emergency conditions you might face.
If you do not find an old used knife, you get the Mora Knife 840 for 10,- € in every Bauhaus building side do it yourself shop. They sell it under the name “Bauhaus Arbeitsmesser, Mora 840”. It is there in a red sheath, and it is printed Bauhaus on, but that doesn’t matter! In other shops for gardening tools you get the “Fiskars K 40” for 10 € too, that is more or less the same knife.
The ability to make fire under almost any condition is essential part of Bushcraft survival.  With Firecraft there are many techniques to building a fire; a fire drill, smoldering plants and trees, sunlight, striking rock that contains iron such as flint,  and of course matches and lighters.  Firecraft in the ability to create, control, and use fire to aid in one’s survival.  Another critical skill in Bushcraft is the ability to transport fire, usually by carrying a burning coal around in some type of dry sage grass to keep it smoldering.  Click on the following links for few things you need to know about building a fire.  Fire Tender – Fire Starters
You should start with the first things I write down here, and than going down on the list, you can take more and more with you. At first you need a knife and some cordage. Every pocket knife is ok for the beginning and every knife with a fix blade in a leather or plastic sheath too. If you have an old one, you have to look for somebody, who can sharpen it for you or can teach you how to sharpen it, what of course is better. You find old men, who have time for you in garden colonies for examples, you can just ask the people at a sunday, who is able to sharpen knifes. Farmers, joiners, carpenters and buchers know professional how to sharpen a knife too. If you can ask a farmer, you can use the chance, and ask him, if he allowes you to practise your outdoor skills on his land, somewhere next to a forest. If you want to make a fire in Germany, the landowner has to allow it to you, and you have to keep a distance of 100 meters to the next forest. That is a law, which protects people from burning the whole forest down. But you will find in that distance a nice corner with some bushes or a hedge, where you can put your little camp. (If in the beginning you do not know a farmer, that is not so important, because you can go in a forest or a place between some fields and practice your outdoor skills, theoreticly you are not allowed to build a nature shelter or a tent in the forest, only on farmers land if it is allowed, but so long you do not make fire, do not dig large holes in the earth and use only dead wood, laying on the ground and leave not to much cordage in the nature, and build only a small natural shelter or poncho or tarp tent, nobody will say anything angainst you.)
These are knives with sturdy blades that withstand splitting wood and are adapted to use with a fire starter. Certain models have both a fire starter and diamond sharpener integrated in the sheath so that you really have everything you need in one place. The handles are made of an easy-grip polymer so that the knife always feels steady and safe in your hands when it’s time to work.
In tropical areas, a survival kit may have mosquito head netting, additional insect repellent, anti-fungal cream, a machete, water purification tablets, foot powder, matches, a flint strike, a compass, a wire saw, a space blanket, medical equipment (gauze pads, elastic gauze bandage, antiseptic creams, anti-malaria tablets, anti-infection tablets, bandages, etc.), salt tablets, a fishing kit, snare wire, extra socks, a candle, a signal mirror, flares, a sewing kit, safety pins, tinder, tape, a whistle, and rations.

The iRonsnow Solar Emergency Weather Radio is a AM/FM & NOAA radio, meaning it broadcasts weather information from the nearest National Weather Service office. If you are stranded without power you can still charge your radio by just cranking it. Its light weight of less than one pound and compact body make it easy to fit in your emergency kits or backpack. This is a great radio to have if you live in an area that gets heavy snow storms or hurricanes. PROS: Functions as radio, flashlight, and phone charger. If you build your shelter in a distance of 100 meters to the forest you will also see the most wild animals, if you are quiet an well hidden in a natural shelter. You should at first ask the farmer at the beginning of the summer, if he allowes you to construct a natural shelter and a small tent and to watch out for wild animals. And from time to time to sleep there. Later in autum, if it starts to become cold and rainy, you can ask him for the fire, when it is not so dangerous for the forest.

Ark isn’t just the best dinosaur survival game you can buy, it’s arguably the greatest dino game ever made. After all, prehistoric beasties make everything better. It’s a survival game that fills every edge of the template: punch trees to get wood, use wood to build shelter, kill animals to find food, inevitably die because you forgot to drink water. Yet Ark transcends the typical survival game pattern by including leathery leviathans that both want to hunt and eat you, but with some perseverance, you can also tame and ride. What’s more, cold wars rage between mega tribes as they seek dominance over their world. Master builders push the limits of creation in a survival game. Dedicated players rack up years of playtime.

The blade - You don’t want some wallflower of a blade when it comes to bushcraft knives. You’ll want something at least 3 ½ inches long crafted from durable high carbon steel so it will retain its edge as long as possible. Some will say that if you’re going to chop wood you should bring along a machete or tomahawk. But since we can’t choose when an emergency situation will arise it’s best if your bushcraft knife is ready to answer the call. The blade on your bushcraft knife should ideally have a drop point that’s good for piercing and either a Scandinavian, Flat, Chisel or Convex grind. Also, it’s essential that the blade be full tang so you can lean into it as aggressively as you have to without worrying about it separating from the handle.

I don’t need to explain why you need this. Just turn on the news. Mass casualty incidents have become the new normal in our sad world, and the situation seems to be escalating. Accidental injuries are a frequent occurrence too. For situations like these, and other emergencies, North American Rescue has designed a Civilian Trauma Kit to provide lifesaving equipment that almost anyone can use. Focused on bleeding control, the CTK consists of a tough clear pouch full of easy-to-use medical supplies. Most importantly, the kit contains a C-A-T® tourniquet, one of the safest and most effective pre-hospital tourniquets available. The kit also contains gauze and pressure dressings to control life threatening bleeds that are not on a limb. Keep a kit like this in your vehicle, hunting pack, bug-out bag and even in your EDC gear. The life you save may be your loved one’s or your own.
I use a big Swiss Army knife and multi tool and knife. I would add, spoon, fork, small stove, pot, isobutane, light tent, sleeping bag+pad, compass and if in mountains an altimeter and paper maps of where you think you are going to be. Instead of flashlight and candles, a headlamp with spare batteries. Raincoat, hat, gloves, food, Grayl water purifyer instead of tablets……all together about 30 lbs of weight. Fits into a 50 liter backpack. Just sharing my experience. It always depends what the purpose of the emergency bag is.
At Bauhaus you will get a tarp for buildingside use too, they are called in german “Gewebeösenplane”. Unfortunatly the 2 x 3 meter tarp you need they sell in the moment only in white colour for 6 euro. The smallest they offer in green is 5 x 3 meters, and that is to large for you. It will fly away in the next wind. So if you do not find in an other shop a green buildingside tarp with 2 x 3 or 3x 3 metrs, you should take for the beginning the white one, if you have not the chance to get one of the following much better options: You should buy at next a used original German Bundeswehr Poncho in oliv for 20 € or the woodland camouflage DPM from the dutch army, which is a bit larger for 25,-€. You can use this as a raincoat, what is in the german summer better than a goretexjacket with trousers. You can use the militaryponcho also as a tarp or tent. ( I own the best mountaineering two persons tent of the world market, the Hilleberg Nallo, which costs nearly 1000 €, but if i do not go in the mountains, or other stormy areas, i use my old Bundeswehr poncho, because it is lighter, and you are with that directly in the nature, and not locked in a closed plastic room, so that simple poncho is very good, i want to say.)

2019 SURVIVAL GEAR - SHTF, Bug Out Bag, WROL - MTP Camo/Multicam

Lightweight survival kits are generally seen as a backup means of survival; however, these can kits can be extensive, and have come to include tools that are generally found in larger kits as survival technology advances. Some examples of these tools are high power flashlights, rapid use saws, signal devices such as mini signal mirrors, and water purification methods.

As you can see there is a lot to learn!  While becoming a bushcraft master can take several years or longer the good news in that there are many small skills that can be quickly learned to get you started.  Additionally, some of the more basic skills like making cordage and batoning branches have many uses and can be applied to more than one discipline.
If you stay out in the woods overnight you’ll definitely want to do some campfire cookery, even if you start off relatively simply. Above I mentioned the value of having a billycan for boiling water in camp. Equally a billy pot is useful for camp cooking too. There are many one-pot meals that can be prepared. You should make sure your billy has a folding handle or bail, from which you can suspend the pot over the fire.
Survival kits, in a variety of sizes, contain supplies and tools to provide a survivor with basic shelter against the elements, help him or her to keep warm, meet basic health and first aid needs, provide food and water, signal to rescuers, and assist in finding the way back to help. Supplies in a survival kit normally contain a knife (often a Swiss army knife or a multi-tool), matches, tinder, first aid kit, bandana, fish hooks, sewing kit, and a flashlight. Rust - ONE V.S.

A knife will get you a long way but you should also acquire a folding saw. Saws are very efficient at cutting across the grain of wood and this will help with many of the jobs which a knife is not particularly well suited to. Saws are also generally safer to use than knives, making some tasks much less risky than using a knife alone. The Bahco Laplander, effectively a pruning saw, is very well suited to the small woodcraft jobs and firewood processing you’ll be doing. I like this model of saw as the blade is hard to snap (unlike some similar models) and the blade locks both open and closed, meaning the chances of cutting yourself unintentionally are reduced. The size of the jobs it will deal with is of a similar scale to those your bushcraft knife will tackle comfortably. The two tools together form a powerful combination for little weight and limited cost.
The other item you should grab when you pack your knife is a cuts kit. This is a small first aid kit with everything you need for dealing with cuts you might suffer from your knife. While you should be careful to employ all the rules of basic knife safety, accidents sometimes happen. In addition, handling rough, abrasive natural materials, sharp plant fibres, thorns and the like, as well as the potential for minor burns from campfires, all mean having a small first aid kit is prudent. I would recommend putting together your own kit to contain the items you want in the appropriate proportions. These can be purchased from a local pharmacy or online. You’ll end up with a better-stocked kit containing higher quality items than most off-the-shelf kits.

A supply of nonperishable food and water are a core necessity for every survival kit. Amazon.com offers several varieties of survival kits with emergency food for different situations. For the boat, car, or RV, high caloric density food bars are a compact and affordable way to stay safe. You’ll also find dehydrated meals in large quantities prepackaged compact bins for convenient storage. Waterproof survival kits are perfect for the basement, and contain up to three months of food for four adults.

I really like the kit, I purchased it for my dad for a birthday present, he drives a whole lot and is constantly in the middle of no where. We are both veterans and both survivelists to. The kit came in very nice packaging and is much higher quality then alot of the other kits on the market. The components are very nice and exactly what you would need to survive if you were stranded off the road and off the grid. I will be purchasing one of these for myself soon as well. Kodos to the manufacturer for putting a very high quality flashlight in the kit, it's very bright and will work well in an emergency senerio. The only thing I would add to the kit would be a red light filter for the flashlight in case light discipline needs to be used.

This bushcraft knife was designed for the Swedish armed forces with survival in mind so it should be no surprise to anyone that it excels in this arena. It’s comfortable to hold, can really take a pounding, might struggle a bit with larger branches due to its light weight but will otherwise rise to every occasion in spectacular fashion. That means you don’t have to shy away from the heavier tasks because the VG10 steel in the blade can take it and then some. Finally, the thermorun handle is surprisingly comfortable and provides a nice firm grip whether you’re bare-handed or wearing gloves.
